Yes, South African regulations allow a maximum of one 9kg gas cylinder to be installed inside an adjacent kitchen cupboard. Any cylinder larger than 9kg, or any setup requiring multiple backup cylinders, must legally be installed outside on a concrete base with protective housing. All installations must meet SANS 10087-1 requirements.

Do I need a COC for my Gas install?

Yes, a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is legally required for all gas installations in South Africa.
This includes installations for gas fires, braais, stoves, ovens, and hot water systems. The CoC confirms that the installation is safe and compliant with relevant regulations.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Legal Requirement:
The Pressure Equipment Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act mandate a CoC for all gas installations.
Purpose:
The CoC ensures that the installation has been inspected and deemed safe and leak-free.
Issuance:
Only a registered gas installer authorized and Licesed by LPGAS and SAQCC can issue the CoC.
Transfer of Ownership:
A new CoC is required upon the transfer of ownership of a property with a gas installation.
Insurance Implications:
Without a valid CoC, your insurance company may refuse to pay out in the event of a claim related to the gas installation.
Insurance companies require a CoC for Gas appliance claims.
Maintenance:
Gas installations should be inspected and maintained regularly to ensure continued compliance, and a new CoC may be required after major renovations/modifications or repairs.
Appliances:
The CoC covers the gas installation itself, not the appliances connected to it, like stoves or geysers.

LPG Regulations and Requirements
These are some of the SANS 10087 codes in summary that have to be met in order for an installation to be compliant.

1. Legal & Safety Background

All fixed LPG/gas installations in South Africa must comply with SANS 10087‑1:2024.

Compliance is not optional — it is tied to laws (such as     the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Pressure Equipment Regulations) and insurance cover.

One of the major requirements is that the installation must be done by a registered gas installer/practitioner (e.g., registered with SAQCC Gas).

After installation, a valid Certificate of Conformity (CoC) must be issued by the installer to certify compliance.

Without compliance and valid CoC you risk safety hazards, insurance rejects, property sale complications and legal exposure.

2. Installer / Practitioner Importance

Only a registered installer has the training and authorization to install, maintain, repair your system safely and legally.

Using an unqualified installer might lead to non‑compliant work, invalid certificates, safety risks and insurance issues.

Always ask for proof of registration/license and ask to see the CoC after installation.

A good installer will follow the manufacturer instructions for each appliance and adhere to the standard’s requirements (for example appliance permit numbers, ventilation, pipework) as prescribed in SANS 10087‑1.

3. Key Installation & Location Rules

Gas containers (cylinders, tanks) must be placed in safe, well‑ventilated locations, away from ignition sources,     electrics, drains, boundaries etc.

Specific minimum distances apply (for example: from doors,     windows, drains, electrical switch-gear) to ensure safe clearance.

Ventilation openings: rooms with gas appliances must have     sufficient permanent ventilation openings (high and low level) based on heat input of the appliances.

Piping systems: correct materials must be used (approved/ SABS‑approved), pipes must be supported, sleeved where needed, avoid incompatible metals (galvanic corrosion), avoid running gas pipes too close to cables.

Flexible hoses: Where appliances need movement (e.g., a hob/movable unit) flexible tubing/hoses are permitted under strict limits (max length 2 m, cannot pass through walls/partitions).

4. Appliance Specifics: Stoves/Ovens & Hobs

Appliances (like stoves, ovens, hobs) must be installed by the registered installer and must comply with the standard for appliances consumption ≤ 10 kg/h etc.

Appliance placement: must be level, firmly supported, and positioned so that burners are not too close to combustible materials, no strong drafts, and ventilation is sufficient.
Appliance connections: must have isolation valves, test points near the inlet of the appliance, shut-off valves, pressure regulators of approved type.

For hobs and stoves the room size and ventilation must take into account the total heat input; inadequate ventilation means risk of incomplete combustion, poisoning (CO), or flame‐out.

5. Appliance Specifics: Geysers (Gas Water Heaters)

Gas geysers (instantaneous water heaters) are treated as fixed gas appliances and must be located as near to point of use as reasonably possible to minimize heat loss.

The location must be mindful: water heaters are ignition sources; clearance to combustibles must be managed.

6. Appliance Specifics: Fireplaces

Fixed gas fireplaces or open flame appliances outdoors must be positioned so that combustibles are protected, heat exposure is controlled, and correct clearances maintained.

Because open flame appliances increase risk, the ventilation, clearances, and ignition‐source distances are particularly important.

7. Ongoing Inspection & Maintenance

One major requirement: regular inspection of the entire gas installation (appliances, components, piping) at least every 5 years (or sooner if required) to ensure leak‑free, safe operation.

Flexible hoses/pigtails must be replaced if over 5 years old or show signs of wear, cracking, chafing.

Repairs must only be done by registered installers/technicians; incorrect repairs may create hazards.

8. Insurance & Property Sale Considerations

If you’re selling a property with a gas installation, you must supply a valid CoC for the installation.

Insurance companies may decline claims relating to gas installations if no valid compliance certificate or installer evidence exists.

9. Why Home‑owners Should Care

Peace of mind: Using a registered installer ensures your family’s safety, minimizes the risk of gas leaks, fires, explosions.

Value preservation: A properly installed, compliant gas appliance adds value and credibility to your home; non‐compliance can undermine this.

Efficiency & performance: When installations comply with the standard, appliances (stoves, hobs, geysers, fireplaces) will     operate safely, efficiently, with lower risk of frequent breakdowns or dangerous faults.
